Credence Compass is a free tool for reading a financial company's public complaint history. This page explains, in plain language, what information is involved when you use it.
The short version
- No accounts, no login. We don't ask for your name, email address or any other personal details, and there are no user accounts.
- The complaint data comes from the CFPB. It is used to build the site's content, and nothing else.
- Google AdSense uses cookies. The site shows ads through Google AdSense, which uses cookies and similar technologies to show and measure ads. Credence Compass itself sets no cookies.
- We don't sell personal information.
Information involved when you use the site
- Standard server information. As with any website, when you load a page your browser sends your IP address, browser and device type, and the address of the page or search you asked for. Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, receives this and keeps standard server logs and aggregate traffic statistics. We don't run separate analytics or tracking tools of our own, and we don't use this information to identify or build a profile of individual visitors.
- The company names you search for or open. When you type a company name into the search box, or open a company page, the name is sent to our server so it can find matches and fetch that company's data. To find matches, the name is also sent to the CFPB's public search service. Company names, search results and each company's CFPB figures may be stored for up to a week, to make the site faster and to keep it working when the CFPB's database is slow. We don't connect any of it to you.
- Email you send us. If you email us, we receive your email address and your message, and we use them only to reply.
Complaint data from the CFPB
All the complaint counts, lists and patterns on this site are built from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's (CFPB) Consumer Complaint Database, which the CFPB publishes for public use. We use it to produce the site's content and for no other purpose. We don't collect complaints ourselves, and we don't add any information about individual consumers. Every complaint on a company page links to its original CFPB record.
Credence Compass is independent and is not affiliated with the CFPB. When you follow a link to consumerfinance.gov you leave this site, and the CFPB's own privacy policy applies.
AI-written text
The plain-English summaries and the "Why?" explanations are written by an AI service (Claude, from Anthropic). It receives only the name and CFPB figures of the company whose page you are viewing. It never receives anything about you. The text written for each company is saved for up to 30 days, so it doesn't have to be written again for every visitor.
Ads and cookies (Google AdSense)
This site uses Google AdSense to show ads. Google and its partners use cookies and similar technologies, such as advertising identifiers, to show and measure ads, and may use information about your visits to this and other websites to show ads based on your interests. This involves collecting information such as your IP address, your device and browser details, and the pages you view. How Google uses this information is described in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services. We don't receive your personal information from Google.
You have choices:
- Turn off personalized ads in Google's Ads Settings.
- Opt out of personalized ads from other participating ad providers at aboutads.info.
- Block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Ads may still appear, but they won't be personalized to you.
Cookies and browser storage
Credence Compass itself sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. The only cookies you may receive while using the site are the advertising cookies from Google described above.
Children
Credence Compass is not directed to children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.
Your choices and questions
Because there are no accounts and we keep no personal profiles, there is generally nothing on our side to access, correct or delete. If you think we hold information about you (for example, an email you sent us), or you have any question about this policy, email us and we'll respond. Depending on where you live, you may have further rights over information held by the services that run this site, such as Cloudflare and Google; their policies explain how to use them.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
